Political Violence and Democracy: DANGER Workshops

In January 2026, the DANGER project will host two workshops at Witten/Herdecke University to present and discuss current research findings and ongoing work within the project.

The workshops focus on the dynamics of politically motivated and extremist violence and their implications for democratic politics. Building on empirical results from the DANGER project, the events bring together scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to exchange perspectives on political violence in Germany and across Europe.

The first workshop, held on January 21, 2026, at 18:30, in Veranstaltungssaal im Holzbau, Universität Witten/Herdecke, addresses recent developments in politically motivated violence in Germany. The discussion invites representatives from state politics and civil society, including Nadja Lüders (SPD, Member of the NRW State Parliament), Volker Pompetzki (CDU Witten, parliamentary group leader and city councillor), Verena Schäffer (Alliance 90/The Greens, Member of the NRW State Parliament), and Sven Tetzlaff (Head of Democracy and Social Cohesion, Körber Foundation).

The second workshop, held on January 23, 2026, at 10:00, in Kleiner Veranstaltungssaal, FEZ, looks into a European comparative perspective. International guests include Helene Pedersen (Aarhus University, Denmark), Pierpaolo Romani (Avviso Pubblico, Italy), and Milorad Ivanovic (Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, Serbia), who discuss different forms of political violence, national contexts, and broader patterns across Europe.

Together, the two workshops provide an opportunity to share progress within the DANGER project, situate its findings in a broader comparative context, and receive feedback from both academic and non-academic experts.
